Generate a Safety Instruction Card

Create a printable workplace safety card showing key hazard, PPE, and first aid information for a product.

A Safety Instruction Card (SIC) is a single-page summary posted at workstations where a product is used. It shows hazards, required PPE, first aid measures, and handling instructions. The wizard lets you choose which sections to include, arrange the layout, and download or save the result as a PDF.

Create a Safety Instruction Card

Open any product from your library, then select Create Docs > Safety Card. The wizard guides you through four steps.

Step 1: Choose how to start

Safety Card wizard Step 1: choose a profile or start from scratch

The first screen shows three ways to begin:

  • Profiles appear at the top. These are reusable templates your team has saved. Each profile shows its name and language. Select one to load its layout and settings.
  • Standard Profiles contain the built-in NextSDS default. It includes hazards, PPE, first aid, handling and storage, fire fighting, and transport sections.
  • Start from scratch creates a new card with default settings.

If you have previously saved cards for this product, they also appear on this screen. Select a saved card to reload it with all settings preserved.

Step 2: Configure settings

Safety Card wizard Step 2: language, page size, and layout options

Adjust the card's basic properties:

  • Language: generate the card in English, French, German, or Dutch
  • Page size: A4 or A5
  • Orientation: portrait or landscape

Toggle additional options:

OptionWhat it does
Color OverrideChange the accent, header, and section colours
Page BorderAdd a coloured border based on the product's signal word (Danger, Warning, or none)
Include QR CodeAdd a QR code that links back to the full SDS for quick access

Step 3: Choose and arrange sections

The section editor shows your card's layout as rows. Each row is either full-width or split into two columns.

Safety Card wizard Step 3: section layout with settings controls

Each section has a colour indicator and a Settings expander. Open Settings to fine-tune the content. For example, choose which PPE icons to display or which first aid measures to include.

Common sections include:

SectionWhat it shows
PictogramsGHS hazard pictograms
Hazard StatementsH-phrases with GHS classification and signal word
Precautionary StatementsP-phrases for safe handling
Personal ProtectionRequired PPE with icons
First AidMeasures for inhalation, skin contact, eye contact, and ingestion
Handling & StorageSafe handling precautions and storage conditions
Fire FightingExtinguishing media and special hazards
Transport InformationUN number, hazard class, and ADR orange plate

Edit the layout

Select Edit Layout to unlock the card structure. In this mode you can:

  • Drag sections between rows and columns using the grip handle
  • Remove sections with the delete button
  • Add blocks to existing rows
  • Insert rows as full-width or two-column

Safety Card wizard Step 3: edit layout mode with drag handles and row controls

Select Lock Layout when finished to return to the section settings view.

Step 4: Preview and download

Review the generated card in the PDF preview. The preview shows the exact output you will receive.

Safety Card wizard Step 4: PDF preview with download options

Choose how to save your work:

  • Download PDF: save the card as a PDF file for printing
  • Download Word: save as a Word document for further editing
  • Save Safety Card: store the card in the product's attachments in NextSDS. Enter a label and, if replacing an existing card, select which one to overwrite.
  • Save SIC as Profile: save the current layout and settings as a reusable team profile

Manage your Safety Card profiles

Your team can create and manage reusable SIC profiles in SIC Profiles settings. Profiles store the full layout, section visibility, colours, and page settings. Set one profile as the default so new cards start with your team's preferred configuration.

What to do next

With Safety Instruction Cards in place, open your workplace locations to run risk assessments and score each product's risk at the point of use.
